Katie Holmes' decision to divorce Tom Cruise was based largely on her longing to distance her daughter Suri from some parts of Scientology, in which her husband is a conspicuous member, according to a source of familiar with the case.Scientology is the main reason of the divorce and Scientology may become a hot-button issue in their split. Holmes reportedly filed for sole legal custody of their daughter Suri, which would give the actress the power to make decisions on the 6-year-old's education and religion choices.
Holmes "has always been more of a Catholic than a Scientologist," a source tells PEOPLE in the magazine's new cover story about the split.
TMZ has reported that Holmes worries she’s being followed by representatives of Scientology, including the
“mysterious” occupants of a white Cadillac Escalade and a black Mercedes SUV seen parked close to her apartment. In an email to the New York Daily News, Gary Soter, a lawyer for the Church of Scientology International, said: “There is no truth whatsoever to the TMZ.com report (or any other report) that the Church of Scientology has sent anyone to follow or surveil Katie Holmes.”
